"SPRING"ing Into Action...

So it's been 8 long months since our last blog post. That's way too long, but our directors and program leaders have all been very busy within their personal lives and within the community. Nevertheless, we've been preparing for Spring and Summer expansions and new ventures for PrimaDonna, Inc. Hereis a recap of what's been going on:

In October, we began working with the Boys and Girls Club in Mount Olive on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every week. We coined the name "sister cirle" for our group. We worked with them from October to December and it was our first pilot program with the B & G Club. During this time we worked with 8-10 girls on teen pregnancy prevention, self-esteem building skills, friendships, positive relationships and many other important topics. During the fall, we did many outings such as attending the county fair and the MTO Christmas Parade. We also began our Parents Matter 5 week program in the beginning of 2012 sponsored and funded by Appalachian State University. They funded us our first grant in the Fall and we have recently found out that we have been chosen for funding this Spring as well! Great job PrimaDonna, Inc.! The purpose of Parents Matter is to provide parents with training on how to teach sex-Ed and other topics to their children. This program teaches parents that they really do matter when it comes to sex education and informing their children.

Whew! That was a lot! Now let's bring us back to today, April 30th, 2012. Today we are preparing for May 2nd, National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day and May 3rd where will be passing out prevention information, selling candy apples and raffle tickets at the Mount Olive Piggly Wiggly Shopping Center. All proceeds will go to PrimaDonna Spring and Summer programs for our girls. We will begin meeting with our new set of parents for Parents Matter later on in May and our Summer programs will begin the 1st Saturday in June.

Check back to see what's to come for PrimaDonna, Inc.

Get Ready to FALL into PrimaDonna...

The summer has gone by ever so quickly! It is already time for back to school shopping…which is one of my favorite times of the year. Although I have graduated from ECU I will never be too old for school (or too old to get excited about back to school shopping)! PrimaDonna took a lot of time this summer to reflect on the past years successes, challenges and future opportunities. We had a GREAT year and are planning to make this school year EVEN BETTER! The old PrimaDonna is no more and the new AND improved PrimaDonna is here to stay!!! What are some changes to our program? Lets see…more parental involvement, more teen pregnancy prevention classes, more outings and activities, more fundraisers, more events and more fun!! This is the year of more so we are going to make it happen!

This summer we also attended many workshops and trainings to ensure that we are equipped with the knowledge needed to be the best youth service agency we can be. Two of our favorite workshops were the Carrerra Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Training program in Durham and the Parents Matter! Facilitators Training in Asheville. Both workshops were AMAZING and were filled with tons of pertinent information concerning sex education and parent involvement. Michael Carrera, the creator of the Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program was the facilitator of the workshop and reminded us that, “Self-esteem is caught, not taught”. He has a comprehensive program that began in NY and is now expanding all over the country. He began his journey with only private funding and is now receiving tons of financial support from all over. Not only did he give PrimaDonna encouragement to keep going in our fundraising efforts, but he actually reached in his pocket and handed us a $100.00 as his donation to our organization.

The Parents Matter! Workshop in Asheville was sponsored by the CDC and Appalachian State University. It was a two day workshop (all expenses paid) that trained us in facilitating the Parents Matter! Curriculum in our town. We met some awesome people there including another Mother-Daughter Team (Melissa and Jasmine) who are going to be dynamite facilitators in Catawba County. The training led with Proverbs such as, “The ruin of a nation begins in the homes of its people” and “A bee cannot make a beehive alone”. These proverbs were good icebreakers and allowed us to dig deeper to find out how they could relate to our parents. Oh and did I mention how breathtakingly beautiful Asheville, NC is? Just the view from my car was ridiculous! Looking out and seeing those mountains before you just reminded me that there is somebody greater than us up there painting the portraits that we call our world.

So what’s next for PrimaDonna? Well, we’ve got fundraisers galore planned for this year (including some surprises from me and one of our Board Members). Our first fundraiser for this month will be a double plate sale consisting of Fried Fish, French Fries, Cole Slaw, Hushpuppies and Cake for $7.00 or Barbecue Chicken, Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Dinner Roll and Cake for $6.00. This fundraiser will be held on Friday, August 12th, 2011. September will be our jumpstart month to get back in the swing of things with our members. We are looking for new members and will host our first interest meeting for the 2011-2012 school year on September 1st, 2011 (location TBA). September 3rd will be our first MAJOR PrimaDonna event for the school year so check back year for more information!

Well, I think I gave a pretty thorough update of what we’ve been doing this summer and I can’t wait to FALL INTO PRIMADONNA this year!!

Love ya :o)

Walk for Abstinence-May 14th

I am pleased to announce that PrimaDonna will be sponsoring a "Walk for Abstinence" at Westbrook Park in Mount Olive, NC on May 14th, 2011 from 9am-1pm to encourage abstinence as a prevention method for disease and unwanted pregnancies for our youth. The focus on young people is because of their vulnerability to social, physical and psychological abuse. There are challenges facing young people worldwide and in Wayne County, such as STD’s, problems of suicide, teenage pregnancy, as well as alcohol and substance abuse.
It is our responsibility as a community to take control of our lives by respecting our bodies and taking care of our health. Abstinence can benefit young people in the following ways:

•Good academic performance and achievement of future goals
•Free from STD’s and unplanned pregnancies
•Free from psycho-social problems resultant from risky behaviors
•Informed choices and good decision making skills

Hate me or Love me...

Ten things you can do as a business or community leader to support girls' rights

1. Introduce girls to career options at your organization or company.
2. Introduce girls to financial concepts your organization or company deals with on a daily basis. (e.g. stocks, accounting, equity)
3. Engage your professional colleagues in discussion about the Girls Inc. Girls' Bill of Rights and Tips for Talking to Girls and how to help spread the concepts.
4. Introduce girls to top women leaders in your organization or company.
5. Find out if your organization or company supports programs that empower girls; if not, advocate for it.
6. Advocate for equitable opportunities for girls and sports in your school systems and in city-sponsored programs. Is there an adequate number of sports teams for girls? Do girls have equal access to the playing fields and quality sports equipment?
7. Advocate for gender-awareness training for teachers in the school system. Are equal numbers of girls and boys taking physics, computer science, home economics, and calculus courses? Are teachers encouraging girls to explore the sciences?
8. Advocate for a safe environment for girls in neighborhoods, schools, and after-school settings. Talk to girls about whether or not they experience harassment.
9. Advocate for comprehensive, accurate information about reproductive health and sexuality for girls. If necessary, change the policies that schools provide comprehensive sexuality education in grades K-12.
10. Advocate for fair and safe juvenile facilities that adequately meet the needs of girls. Does your juvenile justice system understand the different needs of girls and boys?

Here's what else you can do:
Take action: Support comprehensive sex education.
Take action: Preserve sports opportunities for girls.
Find resources: Check out more fact sheets about girls' rights.

PrimaDonna Update...

We've got so much going on this month! September is our time to shine and make noise in Wayne County about Dropout Prevention and Teen Pregnancy Prevention!!! Let's show Wayne County that our girls matter and that if we put our minds to it and work together as a community, we can help put an end to teen premarital sex, pregnancy and the risk of stds in Wayne County.

It's been a long road since I started this project, but let me just say that I have enjoyed every bit of it! I never thought I would see the day where we would actually have internet inquiries and phone inquiries for people and children wanting to be a part of our program. We are working on getting our program in the school system, but until then, we will be holding afterschool sessions and weekend events for all girls interested between the ages of 6-18. (Location and time TBA)

We are also in the process of partnering with a few new partners that are doing similar projects and want to collaborate with us. As a community, we have to work together in order to move forward, so if you are interested in partnering with PrimaDonna, please let me know. As far as fundraising goes, we are excepting donations for students to pay for dance classes and writing grants to secure more funding. Project PEAR is still in the running for the Pepsi Refresh Project until Sept. 30th, so keep voting so that we can continue to help our girls.

Keep viewing our website and mark your calendars for our upcoming events...especially the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Summit on September 25th at 2:00 at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church...it's gonna be AWESOME! We have health department representatives, WCPS teachers, former teen mothers and current teen mothers to speak to our girls about the dangers of premarital sex and the importance of abstinence!

Hope to see you there!

We are still working on tweaking our program within the schools and afterschool, but we have faith that it's gonna happen when it should! In September, we will be hosting a Teen Pregnancy Prevention Summit in Mount Olive (date & location TBA). A lot of awesome events are being planned for you...so keep looking at our website for more information.

Have a Happy Back to School Week!!

PrimaDonna Update...
Hello all...

This week flew by so fast that I barely had time to breathe! As you know, I love being busy because that means that we are getting things done for the youth of Wayne County. This week we got the "go ahead" from WCPS to promote and introduce our program to the students at the Southern Wayne County elementary, middle and high schools. Next week we will be holding meetings with Guidance Counselors and Principals to set up student presentations before the school year ends. So, what is my goal? My goal is to enroll at least 30 girls in our program by July. Check back here for more updates...

Enrichment Reading Circle
Hello All! I just want to thank everyone that has contributed to the development and planning of the Enrichment Reading Circle. We are still in the process of developing a set schedule for the Summer, but the Reading Circle is set to kick off in a few weeks :o) Special thanks goes out to the lovely girls from Mount Olive Middle School and their staff. I would also like to send a special thanks to the following people for their book donations and discounts: Bluford Book Series and Embracing the Child, First Book National Book Bank and Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women.

The purpose of this segment of our program is to encourage our program participants that reading is truly fundamental. The broad spectrum of topics discussed in all books the girls will read will be intriguing and increase their interest in reading and comprehension. We would like to continue the Reading Circle throughout the school-year and through out the summer to ensure that our youth continue reading and understand the impact that reading will have on their everyday lives.

We are so excited to help promote literacy in Wayne County!!

Remember all things are possible if you just believe...look for PrimaDonna Atlanta coming in June ;o)

Fundraising & Funding
Good Morning All!! I am busy, busy, busy researching and locating funding for our Summer Enrichment Program beginning in June. We have found several buildings and have several interested females...but we need more funding!! So, I have made it my point to spend today finding financial solutions for how we can make PrimaDonna, Inc. a success! Girls in Wayne County need help, they need outlets and activities to participate in that are JUST FOR GIRLS! This organization will cater only to females and will promote GIRL POWER and high self-esteem. So, keep looking back to our website for more information on how we can make PrimaDonna, Inc. the best female non-profit in Wayne County...I feel it coming!

Positive Thought of the Day:

Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him.--Psalm 37:7

At the Car Wash...
Hello All!! PrimaDonna, Inc. conducted its first official fundraiser at the Mount Olive Piggly Wiggly!! We washed about a million cars (not really, but a lot)! I have included some pictures of our eventful day. We are also selling raffle tickets for $1.00 and will be hosting the raffle on April 17th, 2010. Buy a ticket from any PrimaDonna and you could win a Nientendo Wii or a $100.00 Gas Card!!

Please look forward to seeing more fundraisers and events posted around Wayne County as we are trying to fund a Summer Enrichment Program for Girls beginning in June. We are also trying to secure a building and will be raising funds for that as well.

Thanks for all your love and support!

Remember...inside we are all PrimaDonna's :o)

New Year, New Dreams!!!
So, this is my first blog for PrimaDonna, Inc. and I am super excited right now about the direction that this organization is going into right now. We are in the process of finalizing all "business" procedures and are preparing for our board interest meeting on Saturday, August 15th, 2009. We are working to ensure that our organization is up and running for the advancement of all females (adults too) within the next two months. We are writing grants and beginning to really dig into all that the government has to offer females of Wayne County. Anyway, I look forward to working with all of you to ensure that we are making a difference in the lives of woman in our county. Next blog comming soon!!!
